Oil on canvas by the Chilean painter Fernando Ruiz, portraying Bernardo O'Higgins, a Chilean military and political figure known as one of the "fathers of the nation" for his role in Chile's independence. In the portrait, O'Higgins is depicted in his military uniform, wearing the tricolor sash of a head of state, gold epaulettes with fringes denoting his rank of Captain General, and various decorations and medals. All these elements convey his high rank at the time. The painting is framed in gilded wood, carved with relief decorations.
