DESCRIPCIÓN
A large colonial painting from Cuzco, possibly depicting the Archangel Ariel, in the arquebusier style typical of the Cuzco school. He is dressed in period clothing. The frame is of the same origin but slightly later, with beautiful carvings and gilding. A carved crane is on its crown.
Origin: Peru, frame is from around 1910, painting from the mid-19th century.
Measurements: Work 64x102cm high. Frame 88x165cm high.
Condition: Fairly good condition for its age. The frame is unfinished, and the paint is very slightly cracked, consistent with its age.

Arcángeles Arcabuceros en la Pintura Virreinal Andina
Los Arcángeles Arcabuceros son una representación pictórica desarrollada en América del Sur durante la colonia española, caracterizada por mostrar ángeles armados con arcabuces en lugar de espadas y vestidos con atuendos militares inspirados en los soldados de la época. Su origen se encuentra en la escuela cuzqueña de pintura, que destacó por su detallismo y riqueza expresiva.
Este estilo tuvo una gran difusión en el siglo XVII, especialmente en Cusco, desde donde se expandió a otras regiones andinas y a Europa. Su popularidad entre los indígenas podría deberse a su similitud con deidades y guerreros prehispánicos, aunque su iconografía se basaba en escritos cristianos sobre la jerarquía angelical.
Uno de los conjuntos más representativos de estas pinturas se encuentra en la iglesia de Calamarca, en Bolivia, donde se conservan diez ángeles arcabuceros restaurados en 1993. Durante el siglo XVIII, la demanda de estas obras creció, expandiéndose a Lima, el Alto Perú, Chile y Argentina. Investigadores han relacionado su devoción con cultos precolombinos a los astros y las guardias militares de los reyes y virreyes españoles.
Estilísticamente, las pinturas destacan por su composición geométrica, el uso de brocados y encajes para dar sensación de lujo y la representación plana típica de la escuela cuzqueña. Ejemplos notables se encuentran en Perú, Bolivia y la iglesia de Uquía en Argentina.
