Santos Chavez - woodcut “Tribute to Life”
Santos Chavez - woodcut “Tribute to Life”
Work by Chilean artist Santos Segundo Chávez Alíster, artist name Santos Chávez, engraver. He was born in Canihual, Arauco Province, on February 7, 1934, and died in Viña del Mar, Chile, on January 2, 2001.
Orphaned at an early age, he had to dedicate himself to farm work, herding animals, and tilling the land from childhood to support his family of seven siblings. His definitive commitment to art came in the city of Concepción in 1958, where he worked during the day and attended painting classes at the Society of Fine Arts at night. There he met renowned artists such as Tole Peralta and followers of Mexican muralism, such as Julio Escámez, Gregorio de la Fuente, and Jorge González Camarena.
In 1961, he continued his studies in Santiago at the 99 Engraving Workshop, invited by Nemesio Antúnez, who had discovered his natural artistic talent. He became Delia del Carril's assistant and was a contemporary of Eduardo Vilches, Pedro Millar, Teresa Gazitúa, Dinora Doudchitzky, and Jaime Cruz. He perfected his techniques in lithography, etching, drypoint, and woodcut.
