Children's Month in Bucharest Art

Mes de la Niñez en Bucarest Art

For August, we've decided to embrace childhood and present a special selection inspired by childhood. Discover our treasures and also learn a little about their history. If we look back in time, we can see how children have been a source of inspiration for artists of different movements and periods, and we can find sculptures, paintings, and even decorative art with children's themes.

Between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, purchasing children's furniture became customary among upper-class families. This boom stemmed from a shift from an adult-centric view of childhood to a valuation of children based on their specific needs. Chairs, desks, tables, and children's beds became part of the furniture that adorned the homes of bourgeois families of the time.

As for artistic expressions inspired by childhood, we must highlight the 17th and 18th centuries, when putti figures—cherubs or angels depicted as plump, usually naked, children—emerged. These sculptures, which sought to evoke the innocence and joy of childhood, decorated the gardens and palaces of the time.

Below we've curated a special collection that reflects how childhood is a space for exploration and inspiration for art and everyday life.
